Doug Meeker, owner & operator of The Liquid Edge, a boat distributor in Farmer City, said that he approaches his business with the mindset that he is not is sales, but provides what his customer needs & solves problems. He challenged the students to adopt this mindset as they are beginning to launch their businesses. Hard work, a passion for the industry, a belief that there was a need, and calculated risks attribute to his success. Other lessons Doug imparted on the students:
* Find what you are passionate about
* Grow slow.
* Quality should always be top priority.
* Your business in your brand...protect the brand.
* Being smart, kind and polite always pays off.
* Have someone working for you that wants your job (intrapreneur mindset & loyalty)...and if YOU work for someone make sure they have a place to go (so you too can advance).
